This hike allows to you to admire Misurina Lake from a different point of view, but the lake it is not the main reason to afford this path. In fact, the main feature of this hike is solitude, wildness, and the amazng ruins of the old Popena Hut, burned by unknown in 1948. The hike is so close to Cortina d’Ampezzo and starts from Tre Croci Pass, exactly 1 km down the pass, on the road to Misurina Lake and Auronzo di Cadore. The path offers many satisfying views on all the peaks around, expecially on Mount Sorapiss and on the group of Cadini di Misurina. You will hike on the slopes of Mount Popena (mt. 3,152), a branch of Mount Cristallo (mt. 3,221). The absence of active huts makes this area particularly wild and solitary, and therefore more appealing. Altitude height difference is medium so the hike is for everyone who have a minimum of mountain experience. The path starts on the road SS48 that from Cortina d’Ampezzo goes to the Tre Croci Pass. The starting point is at car park at the bridge 1km after Tre Croci Pass (direction Misurina/Auronzo) at an altitude of mt 1,710. A wood panel shows to you the begin of the path number 222 that quickly goes into the woods and begin to walk uphill. The path goes on variously with moderate ascent until the fork with path 224 that goes directly to Misurina. Keep your left and stay on path 224 that soon begins a climb a bit steeper. Path goes on on a scree without any difficult until another fork with a wood panel. On you right you can directly goes down to Misurina, but on your left in 15 minutes you can reach the Forcella Popena 2,220 mt with the ruins of the Popena Hut and a spectacular view on the Piz Popena, Popena Valley and all Dolomites of this area. When I did it in summer 2018 the path after the fork was interrupted by a small landslide. Overcoming the slope, you see path 222 again that quickly goes up on a part that easily landslide. This is the this is the most challenging stretch, be careful not to slip down. Suddenly down of your feet the path becomes easy, flat and grassy. You are at the old ruined hut! Do not miss this panoramic point to admire the fantastic panorama. Going back until the last fork take the path on your left (224) that without any difficult in about 1 hour takes you to Misurina Alm (tasty cheese!) and then to the lake. You can go back to tour car taking the DolomitiBus from Misurina Lake to Passo Tre Croci and then in 15 min. by feet.
