The visit to the interesting open-air museum of World War I in the Dolomites at Mount Piana is strongly recommended and allows to know how the war involved these high mountain area. Monte Piana is likely to be the easiest place to visit for who want to know more episodes of the 1915-1918 War in the Dolomites.
It is also the opportunity to walk on a spectacular and big plateau at 2300 mt. The plateau is surrounded by large soaring cliffs and breathtaking views of the northern sector of the Dolomites. It is a privileged place to admire the Tre Cime di Lavaredo/Drei Zinnen.
Monte Piana plateau allows you to do a beautiful Promenade. You can start the trail from the “Angelo Bosi” Hut (2.200 mt.), approachable with the Jeep-Shuttle, so you can devote more time to visit the various remains of trenches and stalking, and the so much wonder landscaping. Otherwise, you can reach the Hut hiking from the Misurina Lake (1750 mt.) in a large and old military cart road closed to traffic (1,5-2 hrs.).
The visit is easy, there are many traces of trails, but not a necessary a path.
There is the possibility to hike a trail for experts on the most exposed positions on the edge of vertiginous walls, the path partially equipped with a metal cord (ferrata). But I will not describe this path. Basically the top is a vast plateau, which stretches for about 2 kilometers in length. At this altitude there is timberline, but high mountain meadow with spectacular blooms.
Mount Piana is the paradigm of the absurdity of the war waged between these mountains. Men who spoke the same language and were from neighboring countries. At the beginning of military operations the fighters were Tyrolean, Ampezzo and Cadore people. On this hike the mood is of respect and honor for the fighters, without any distinction of deployment. And the desire to understand their life on these peaks, too much painted with false rhetoric.
