This is a beautiful and not difficult hike in a relaxing environment, characterized by large high-altitude meadows, all above 2,000 mt. The main area to admire in this hike is a magical place called Mondeval, where in 1985 the burial of a hunter from the Mesolithic era was found with all his funerary equipment. Mondeval is a large grassy clearing of high altitude, without trees or shrubs, absolutely fascinating, set between dolomite rock environments and other of volcanic origin (black rocks), which could recall an Irish landscape.
The Monte Formin is the highest point of the so called Lastoi, which towards the northeast descend with modest slopes while for the rest they fall with 300-meter-long walls much appreciated by climbers..
The hike is always at the most between 2.200-2.400 mt altitude, so it is not particularly tiring, but I suggest you to start early in the morning, both because the first light of the sun makes these places even more beautiful, and because Mondeval is now a fairly tourist destination. On the ascent to the Lastoi di Formin you will find much more solitude, as many prefer to continue to the famous Lago della Croda da Lago , but I assure you that Formin’s slabs deserve a hike. On this hike I choosed to return by the same route, but it is possible to continue by making a circular loop going down from Forcella Formin along path 435 then 437 to the Ponte di Ru Curto (mt. 1708 m) where you should have left earlier a second car or you will have to return to Passo Giau hitchhiking.
Hike description: From Cortina or Alleghe, drive up to Passo Giau (2.236 mt), where you can park for free. Here take the path 436 which heads first towards Forcella Zonia, crosses a small fork (where the path to Monte Cernera starts on the right) and reaches Forcella Giau (2.360 mt). From here you lose a little altitude, still following the marker 436, descending into the Mondeval, and then regaining it by gradually approaching the Forcella Ambrizzola. Shortly before this fork, turn left into trail 435 which runs northwards under the Cima Ambrizzola and easily leads to the Forcella Rossa del Formin (2.462 mt; 2.30 from the pass). The simple ascent of Mount Formin is absolutely to do for the views it offers (+45 minutes). The tracks run eastwards along the Lastoi, finally passing easy rocks (with foggy weather or if you walk into clouds poor pay attention to some cracks that cleave the slabs).
To go back to the Pass you can do the same way, or go down through the Val Formin (path 435), then along the 437 up to Ponte Rucurto (1.708 mt). Second car or hitchhiking needed.
