The summit of Mount Sassongher (mt. 2.665) can be considered a destination suitable for a hiker because, although the last stretch of the climb to the summit is equipped with a fixed metal rope (like the “vie ferrate”), these are short and not overhanging, and can therefore also be climbed by the hiker who is equipped with a safety rope or harness and has mountain experience and does not suffer from vertigo.
Reaching the summit of Sassongher is an absolutely gratifying experience because this mountain is located in the middle of one of the most important Dolomite valleys (Val Badia) and it dominates most of the Dolomites, from the Marmolada, to the Sella group, to the Tofane, to the Cunturines and much more.
Access to this summit can be made starting from the town of Colfosco in Badia, facing approximately 1,000 meters of positive uphill gradient. To reduce the effort it is possible to overcome the first part with the Col Pradat chairlift, which earns about 300 meters of altitude (single ticket for adults € 6.80, kids up to 8 yrs. old are free) and can therefore be a valid alternative for less trained hikers. The peak can then be reached in about 2,5 hours of path, easy in the first half and then more steeply and among the rocks in the second half.
In the last half hour, stretches equipped with fixed metal rope and then the last stretch on foot towards the large summit. There are no particular dangers even in the equipped sections, which can be classified as a short and easy “via ferrata”, which can also be approached by the expert hiker provided with caution and attention especially in case of bad weather (go down to the valley to avoid being at risk of lightning! ). Sassongher is a beautiful peak facing three sides and reaches almost 2,700 meters of altitude. The hike will be very satisfying and fun and can be done in half a day or a day with the necessary stops. Downstream of the mountain you will find the Edelweiss hut, a good base in case of need.
